Admission Requirements
To apply for admission to any of the graduate programs in philosophy, the following documents are required:
- A completed application form
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and any graduate work (Note: faxed copies of transcripts are not considered official).
- NOTE: If your transcript is from a non-US institution a transcript evaluation is required. This applies to both international applicants and US applicants who completed post-secondary education abroad. Please see ºÚÁÏÍø Graduate for more information.
- A statement of purpose describing academic and research interests, as well as professional goals
- Three letters of recommendation
- These will ideally be from faculty at your previous institution. For some programs (e.g. MA in Social Philosophy) letters from professionals in your field may be appropriate.
- A writing sample of what you regard as your best written work in philosophy or a related field. This will typically be a research paper, approximately 12-20 pages in length.
- Optional (not required): a personal essay
- International applicants whose native language is not English need to provide proof of English proficiency unless they are eligible for a waiver to this requirement. Please see ºÚÁÏÍø Graduate for more information.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are no longer a requirement in our admissions process, and furthermore will not be considered even if they are submitted.

Application & Decision Deadlines
- MA program: Rolling admission - Note: While you may apply at any time, applications for Fall admission will be reviewed February 15th and May 15th. Applications for Spring admission will be reviewed October 1st.
- PhD program: Fall application deadline is January 15 (for assistantship applicants)
- Decisions regarding entrance into the PhD program must be made by the applicant by April 15
